Kevin M. Matheis, an on-scene coordinator for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, died Tuesday
in Buffalo General Medical Center. He was 46.
Born in Biloxi, Miss., he grew up in North Tonawanda. He was a 1983 graduate
of North Tonawanda High School and graduated from Buffalo State College in 1988.
Mr. Matheis had worked for the Environmental
Protection Agency since 1990. He was an on-scene coordinator who oversaw the Western New York region and was responsible for
heading federal Superfund hazardous waste cleanup sites.
For his contribution to safeguarding the environment, Mayor
Byron W. Brown declared June 30, 2011, Kevin Matheis Day in Buffalo. Mr. Matheis also was a guest lecturer on the environment
at many local high schools and colleges.
He was a 25-year member of the Buffalo Geological Society and was awarded
the Buffalo Golf Club 2009 golf tournament First-Place Club Championship for Class C.
He is survived by his wife of
19 years, the former Cynthia M. Wojtczak; a daughter, Zoe; his mother, Doris; a sister, Ellen Staniszewski; and a brother,
Mark.
A service will be at 5 p.m. Saturday in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 1080 Main St.
